Full-glacial

Finally, cold-climate gravel and sands were then emplaced. These coarse clastics either cap the sequence or abut the fine sediment channel fills that remain. This relationship seen at many sites, e.g. at Ardleigh, Essex; Maxey, Cambridgeshire; Swanton Morley, Norfolk is invariably erosional and therefore implies a removal of pre-existing sediment, potentially representing a considerable time interval. Indeed, during the last cold stage (Devensian, Weichselian), the deposition of these overlying coarse clastics has never been shown to have occurred immediately after the previous interglacial but locally 20-30,000 y. and more commonly 50-60,000 y. later. Unknown erosional and depositional activity may well have occurred during this extended time period although the evidence for it is no longer available.
